No hot water? Simple problems like pilot re-light
or more serious issues such as overheating, small drain valve leaks
or the dreaded end-of-the-line split in the water-tank.
A few will have noticed the John Wood, Rheem or Giant hot water heater isn't supplying the same amount of hot water they are use to. Other more unfortunate consumers have found the tank has started to leak, and in some cases, flooded the home causing a large mess and damage to belongings not to mention structural damage to walls and flooring.
If your water tank is
leaking badly, turn the energy supply off.
Electrical waterheaters have a breaker switch located in the electrical
Gas waterheaters in Calgary have a gas valve below on the tank itself that can be turned to off. After that, locate the water valve that is in most cases on the cold water inlet above the tank.
If you have a badly flooded home, an Calgary disaster restoration company can be called to clean it up. You may also have insurance coverage to help with any clean-up or repairs caused by flooding.
Call your insurance broker and find out.
If you do not see any water leaking from the bottom of the water heater, yet have no hot water, your water heater burners or heating elements (electric waterheaters) have failed. All natural gas waterheaters manufactured in Canada after January 2008 are seal up around the burner areas making it difficult to gain entry. However, the water heater will have a "clicker" similar to a BBQ igniter. Older water heaters have a pilot light that can be re-lite or repaired. Follow the instructions that are written on the side of the water heater for relighting.
If you see water leaking from a brass valve located near the top of the tank. This is called a "pressure relief valve". Do not plug it off. This valve has released an excessive amount of pressure build-up due to a number of factors like over heating. The valve may need replacing. Remember, if your hot water tank is 10 years or older, replacement is your best option rather than repair.
Other minor leaks can occur from the drain valve located near the bottom of the tank. Replacement of this valve is recommended if you can not simply turn the tap portion tighter to stop the dripping drain valve.

Year over year, more burns are caused by hot liquids than fire. For hot liquid burns the greatest risk are children 6 and under and senior citizens. Others with skin sensitivity issues are also at risk for scalding. Keeping your hot water tank at 49 degrees Celsius or 120 degrees Fahrenheit is one way to reduce the risk of burns from your water tap. Saving money on your gas or electric water heater energy consumption in Calgary can be easy with foil wrapping. Unless your water heater's storage tank already has a high R-value of insulation (at least R-24), adding insulation to it can reduce standby heat losses by 25%–45%. This will save you around 4%–9% in water heating costs. If you don't know your water heater tank's R-value, touch it. A tank that's warm to the touch needs additional insulation. Insulating your storage water heater tank is fairly simple and inexpensive, and it will pay for itself in about a year. You can find pre-cut jackets or blankets available from around $10–$20. Choose one with an insulating value of at least R-8. Call your utility company and ask if they offer the wraps at no charge.

build-up on the bottom of the tank
is common due to hard water in some areas in and around Calgary. Scale build-up will decrease life, and efficiency. A mini-flush can be done with a bucket, and drain a few gallons of water. The longer flushing method using a hose is best.
This is done by hooking a hose to the tap on the bottom of the water
heater, turning on the tap, let it run for about 5 minutes, turn off
and that's it!
When installing a water-softener for the first time in your home, make sure you have the hot water heater inspected by a qualified Calgary plumber for age and condition. New water softeners can cause the old water-heater sediment to dissolve, thus expose a hole in the tank.
The picture shows a healthy Anode rod. The rods are removed usually from the top of the hot water heater. Call our page Calgary Water Heater professional to have your Anode rod replaced once every two years minimum. If you have a water softener, you may need to have the rods changed once a year.
